AI POP Displays vs Vizcom: Which One for Retail Display Design?

A prospect told me on a call this summer that before finding us, she'd evaluated Vizcom for her display work. She designs point-of-purchase displays at a manufacturer, a customer sends a sketch or a brief, and she has days (sometimes hours) to come back with a concept the customer can approve. Vizcom's sketch-to-render pitch looked like exactly that. It wasn't, quite. This post is about why, and about where Vizcom genuinely is the better tool.
I build AI POP Displays, so read this knowing where I stand. I'll keep the comparison honest, because the fastest way to lose you is to pretend Vizcom is a bad tool. It isn't. It's built for a different job than ours: sketching products. Not for POP displays, and not for POP materials.
What Vizcom is
Vizcom is an AI design platform for product designers, co-founded in 2021 by Jordan Taylor, an industrial designer who came out of Honda R&D and NVIDIA, with Kaelan Richards as CTO. It has raised $52M, most recently a $27M Series B led by Radical Ventures in October 2025, and the logo wall on its homepage now runs to around seventy companies including Ford, Nissan, Stellantis, New Balance, Kohler, Dell and Sonos. You draw or import a sketch, it renders into a full-fidelity image in real time, and from there the concept goes into 3D models and animation. The 3D half has become the headline rather than a side feature. It also has an Autodesk Fusion plugin that shipped in May 2026 and is still the only integration, a Mac and Windows desktop app, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and a free tier for verified students and educators.
Its solution pages name five verticals, and they are industrial design, automotive, footwear, apparel and gaming. Retail displays aren't among them. Search the entire site for retail, point-of-purchase, packaging, merchandising or display and you get nothing back, which tells you where the product knowledge went.
Worth saying plainly because it cuts against my argument: adjacent companies are clearly getting value out of it anyway. Outform, which builds in-store retail displays, is on that logo wall, and so are packaging firms like Amcor, Mauser and Dart Container. So the honest claim isn't that nobody in this industry uses Vizcom. It's that Vizcom doesn't build for this industry, and you feel the difference the moment your input is a brief instead of a drawing.
Where Vizcom makes sense
If your job is designing products (vehicles, footwear, furniture, consumer hardware) and you work from your own sketches, Vizcom is a solid option.
- Sketch fidelity. It preserves your linework and proportions while rendering over them. Your design stays your design, which is the whole point for a trained industrial designer.
- Real-time iteration. Live Render updates as you draw, so it behaves like a sketching tool rather than a prompt box. It's a paid-tier feature, not something you can evaluate on the free plan.
- 2D to 3D. A rendered concept becomes a rotatable 3D model, and the Fusion plugin pushes it into real CAD.
- Compositing. Unify, which they shipped in December 2025, drops a rendered object into a scene and matches the lighting and shadows to it. This is the feature that comes closest to what display work needs, and I'll come back to it below.
- Enterprise depth. SSO, audit logs, team workspaces, security reviews done. A 50-designer team at a Fortune 500 can adopt it without a fight with IT. Note that all of that is Enterprise, not Professional, which is a single seat.
None of that is in question. The question is whether its verticals include yours, and point-of-purchase isn't one of them.
Where it stops for POP display work
Point-of-purchase design has its own vocabulary, and Vizcom doesn't speak it. The gaps show up in four places.
1. No display formats. POP work runs on named formats with known geometries: floor displays (FSDUs), endcaps, counter units, glorifiers, shelf trays, dump bins, totems. In AI POP Displays those are structured options with correct proportions built in. In Vizcom, a display is whatever you manage to sketch. If you can draw a dimensionally believable FSDU freehand, you didn't need help with the concept. If you can't, the tool won't supply the format knowledge.
2. No retail context out of the box. A display concept gets approved when the client can see it in the store, meaning the supermarket aisle, the pharmacy counter, the beauty boutique shelf. This is the gap Unify partially closes, and I'd rather flag that than pretend it doesn't exist. It will composite your fixture into a scene and match the light convincingly. What it won't do is supply the scene. You bring the aisle, you judge whether the shelf height and the sight line read correctly, and you carry the retail knowledge yourself. AI POP Displays ships the environments as options, because "what will it look like in the aisle" is the question the client actually asks and it shouldn't cost you a separate sourcing job.
3. No product load. A retail display exists to hold product. Concepts have to show believable shelf counts, facings and pack placement, and this is where general design tools drift into fantasy structures that a manufacturer quietly has to redesign. Our briefing layer takes your actual product shots and loads the fixture realistically, because the render is going to a manufacturer who has to build it.
4. Different starting input. Vizcom starts from your sketch. Display work usually starts from a customer email: sector, product, format, a mood reference if you're lucky. AI POP Displays starts from that brief, in plain language, and takes references on top: a sketch, a previous render, product photos. If the customer sends you a drawing or an old render of a display, you attach it and the concept follows it. It's the difference between a tool built for designers who draw and a tool built for the brief-to-concept race.
Pricing, and a privacy detail worth knowing
Vizcom's free Starter plan is generous on paper, with 800 credits a month that their own page puts at around 200 images. The caps are 10 files, HD-only export, the slow queue, and no Live Render or batch generation. Professional is $49 per user per month, or $480 per user per year, which works out at $40 a month. Their annual toggle advertises a 30% saving and the actual discount is closer to 18%, so check the number rather than the badge. Professional is one seat. Teams, roles and SSO are Enterprise.
The detail that matters more than the price sits in their terms of service rather than on the pricing page. On a Starter account, Vizcom retains title to the designs you create, and free-tier content may be used to train their AI models. Their marketing pages say flatly that they never train on your designs, which is true of paid plans and not true of the free one, so read the terms and not the banner. The education tier sits in the same training bucket as Starter, which is worth knowing if you're a student rendering a live client brief. Paid plans are contractually excluded, and they say so in more than one place, so the fair version of this is narrow: design privacy is a $49 feature, not a default.
AI POP Displays starts free with 15 one-time trial credits, no card required, and Pro is $49/month for 150 renders, a founding price with the $69 list price announced up front. Privacy isn't a tier: nothing you render or upload trains AI models, on any plan. Most display concepts are client work under NDA, so we don't think that should cost extra.

- You design products and you work from your own sketches. Vizcom fits that job.
- You design displays at a manufacturer or agency and the input is a client brief, a sketch or a reference render. AI POP Displays. Format vocabulary, retail context and product load are the actual job.
- You're a brand marketer who needs a display concept to send to manufacturers. AI POP Displays. You'll get a manufacturable-looking concept without knowing how to draw one.
- You design both the product and its retail presence. Use both. They meet at the handoff, not in the same canvas.

You can sketch a display and Vizcom will render it, the same way it renders a car or a sneaker. What it doesn't have is retail display vocabulary.
